I’m Fishing a Big Bass Tournament…

I’m fishing a big bass tournament out of a new Legend V20 bass boat I’ve never fished from, at a lake that I have fished very little. My goal is to catch the biggest largemouth bass out of all the other seven pro fishermen that are there. If I succeed, I win ten thousand dollars! It took me a while to remember how to fish in a bass tournament. On day one of the Big Bass Splash tournament, it was a challenge keeping the fish on, and even getting bites after the first few hours of the day. I was flipping for bass in bushes after having no luck fishing a jig and worm in deeper water where I had found some big bass pre fishing the day before. I’m amongst some of the best Bassmaster elite series and FLW pros out there, so I need to step up my game to catch a giant bass and bring home the cash!

Braided Line and Leader Length

Many anglers have made the switch to braided line for their bass fishing but many still struggle with the specifics. The main struggles are when to tie a leader, how long should a leader be, what knots to use for braided line, When to use a leader and when to tie direct to braided line.
In this video Matt focuses on when to tie a leader and how long that leader needs to be for different techniques like flipping, pitching, crankbaits, jigs, finesse fishing, topwater, etc.

Matt’s preferred Lines…

Sufix 832 Braided Line:
Power Pro Maxcuatro Braided Line:
Seaguar AbrazX Fluorocarbon:
Maxima Ultragreen Monofilament:

**We do not advocate Maxima Ultragreen as a main line because it is stiff and has excessive memory until broken in. However, as a leader material it is phenomenal! It has strength, shock absorption, and abrasion resistence.

Matt’s preferred rods for various braid to leader techniques…
Flipping- Dobyns 795 Flip:
Pitching- Dobyns 765 Flip:
Lipless Crank- G Loomis 845 CBR:
Squarebill- G Loomis 845 CBR:
Medium Cranks- St. Croix 7’8″ Med/Hvy:
Large Crankbait- Dobyns 805 CB:
Spinnerbait- G Loomis Spinnerbait:
Dropshot- G Loomis Dropshot:
Shakey Head- Dobyns 742 Spinning:
Jigs- Dobyns 784C:

Need a less expensive option than what we’re using? We recommend looking for the same powers in one of the following lines, all are great rods!

GLoomis E6X:
Shimano Zodias:
Dobyns Fury:

Matt’s connection knot of choice to connect braid to mono or fluoro leader material is a blood knot. Here is the video on how to tie the blood knot:
